Aboriginal Education
Kaya Wandjoo – Hello and Welcome
Salvado Catholic College acknowledges our nation’s first peoples and appreciates that we learn, play and reside on Whadjuk Boodja (Noongar land). We pay our respects to Aboriginal people and the elders past, present and emerging, and we continue to learn from our local Noongar community.
Rosendo Salvado had a strong connection to the land and the local Yuet people of New Norcia. At Salvado Catholic College, we strive to build awareness of students’ understanding and knowledge of our shared history and our nation’s first peoples.
Culturally responsive pedagogical practices are embedded across the College and enable a shared focus on developing the whole person in the image and likeness of God, as students learn to respect one another and embrace diversity. Aboriginal Education is integrated into all Learning Areas, and Aboriginal culture is celebrated across the College in a variety of ways including Noongar word of the week and the Wandjoo (welcome) song. NAIDOC Week celebrations are also an annual highlight, with Aboriginal students and their families as well as community organisations, leading the week-long focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Across the College, the students engage in a variety of tasks throughout the week to deepen their knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture. Students, staff and families alike, look forward to coming together to celebrate, collaborate and learn from one another.
Salvado Catholic College is committed to continuing to establish practices that support awareness, understanding and appreciation of the local Whadjuk Noongar people.
